The Green Woman, a counterpart to the Green Man, though often forgotten as have so many of the stories of the Feminine in the Patriarchal Age, plays a vital role in protecting wilderness.
Robin Hood, Peter Pan, the Horned God....most of us have heard of these versions of the Green Man. But where has the Green Woman been portrayed? Snow White? She was a nature Goddess, but she knew all the domesticated chores of a housewife for the Seven Dwarves. The Wicked Witch of the West was literally green, but she was, well, WICKED. Housewife and househusband chores are important. Sometimes wickedness serves a purpose.....BUT, we are not limited as women to Mother/Evil Eve Temptress. And those archetypes have been horribly traumatic, limiting, and dysfunctional for a very, very long time. It's time to re-write the stories.
Little Red Riding Hood, the young girl who ventured out into the forest, was threatened with being devoured by the Wolf, the ultimate symbol of wilderness. In Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, the Wild Woman Archetype is explored as a vital and vastly under-represented aspect of the feminine psyche. For SHE, the Green Woman, is the one who inspires feminine sovereignty. SHE is also the one more aligned with Lilith, the one who was actually cast out of the garden because she wasn't domesticated enough for Adam. Prior to that she had been his equal. Wolves in the wilderness act as the indicator species to maintain healthy checks and balances in ecological systems. The re-introduction of wolves into Yellowstone Park or other public lands has proven to dramatically and positively altar the landscape and species balance.

The undomesticated part of our soul that is a Guardian of nature is also the driving force behind our creative, animal instincts. Just another aspect of our being that has been swept under the rug for a few thousands years while we emphasized the cerebral realms, scientific explorations and Godly, male worshipping spiritual pursuits. While that has brought us to amazing new heights, simply put, we are out of balance and the way we treat women around the world and the planet is representative of this imbalance.
We are facing the destruction of our planetary home. The Green Woman is ESSENTIAL to ensuring our planetary home provides clean food and water, and abundance and beauty for future generations, as well as for the restoration of our human psyche.
